Ontario has designated the week beginning on the third Sunday of November as Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week to help promote safe schools and a positive learning environment. In preparation, St. Jerome has invited “Brave Education” (https://braveeducation.com) to conduct virtual workshops with our Grade 1-8 students. Both in person and remote students will participate with their class.
- FDK students will have a classroom copy of the children’s book, “How Brave Found His Roar” and begin developing the vocabulary and understanding of what the definition of bullying really is and what it looks like.
- Students from grades 1 to grade 3/4 will take part in the Level 1 program which includes topics such as: Identifying Bullying, Verbal Bullying, Cyber Bullying, Identifying Behaviours, Confidence, Tone of Voice and the most important Walk Away & Talk Away strategy. Each student from Grade 1-3 students will receive their very own copy of the children’s book, “How Brave Found His Roar.“. It is important for me to provide your children with a tangible reference that could continue to reinforce the concepts taught during these sessions. The book will be distributed to both in class and remote learners at the end of the month. On November 25th students will take part in a webinar book reading.
- Students from grades 4-8 will take part in the Level 2 program which includes topics such as: Understanding the Bystander, S T A N D Intervention Steps, Spot, Notify and Diffuse. On November 25th, 26th and 27th Brave facilitators will conduct workshops with each class.
- Teachers and Staff have been de-briefed on the program and have access to videos and resources to begin the discussion leading up to the actual workshops.
We hope that this program will provide students with the necessary tools and strategies to be aware and deal with conflict in proactive ways.
